The Definitive Guide to Houston

Tamales and More at Brasil’s Brunch

in Dining & Nightlife by

Weekend brunch is a lifestyle, an expression of extravagance that we get to revel in every weekend. Like a favorite top that comes in many colors, there are many kinds of brunch: trendy; boozy; celebratory. For your next artsy, casual brunch, we recommend Brasil in Montrose.

Brasil sits at the corner of Westheimer and Dunlavy, right in the heart of the trendy Westheimer curve. Deceptively roomy, the casual restaurant boasts two interior rooms, a front patio, and a back patio. The walls are like a gallery, displaying unique local art and prints. Brasil is casual in that you order at the counter, take a number, and wait for your food at the table of your choice.

Opened in ’92, the restaurant claims to have been Houston’s first specialty coffee house. True to their heritage, they offer a solid menu of coffee and espresso favorites. Alongside your morning cup of caffeine, don’t hesitate to order some breakfast booze. Their mimosas are a great combination of freshly squeezed orange juice and generous pours, and they also have a solid selection of wine and beer.

For your main, choose from a menu that includes Shrimp & Grits with Fried Oysters, Tamales & Eggs, and Avocado Toast. There is also an array of bakery items, plus specials and sides. As a bonus, they’re big on local vendors, and source a lot of their ingredients from small local businesses.

Of course, brunch isn’t Brasil’s only offering. On weekdays, they open at 7AM for breakfast and offer up tasty menus for each meal of the day. They even have weekly events, like live jazz on Wednesdays and First Thursday movie screenings, hosted by the Houston Film Commission.

Brasil’s hours are listed below, and they also offer Happy Hour from 3 – 6PM Monday through Friday. Although they don’t have a dedicated parking lot, free parking is available on Dunlavy and Westheimer, and there are a few paid lots nearby. From the yummy food to the artsy atmosphere, we know you’ll enjoy brunch at Brasil. Cheers!

Monday – Wednesday: 7AM – 11PM
Thursday & Friday: 7AM – 12AM
Saturday: 8AM – 12AM
Sunday: 8AM – 11PM
