The Definitive Guide to Houston

Love Local (Foods)

When visiting a new city, you want to have the best and eat it too. That’s where we come in, with recommendations on scrumptious places across town. Today, we’re here to bulk up your Places to Lunch list — up toward the top, pencil in Local Foods.

Founded in 2011 by H-town natives Benjy Levit and Dylan Murray, Local Foods has since expanded to 4 locations: Rice Village, Upper Kirby, Tanglewood, and Downtown. Known for their dedication to local (of course), healthy ingredients, Local Foods also offers a plethora of vegan and vegetarian options, as well as a selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.

Fan favorites from the menu include the Crunchy Chicken Sandwich (nut “crumble,” provolone, buttermilk ranch, pickles, romaine, tomato, pretzel bun) and Garden Sammie (Brussels sprouts, avocado spread, hummus, pickled onions, tomato, ciabatta), but you really can’t go wrong. And like any healthy restaurant worth its kale, Local Foods will serve any sandwich as a salad.

To order, hop in line and make your selections at the counter. It’s seat yourself, so choose from any available tables or booths. A server will deliver your drinks and meal, then bus it away once you’re finished. Decor is a hyper trendy “industrial-cool,” featuring lots of sunlight, statement light fixtures, map details, and white tiles. Bonus: On nice days, you can head out to the patio to enjoy your sammie with a side of sun.

If you arrive at a peak time, expect a line, because word’s long since gotten out about this tasty stop. But the short wait won’t kale ya, especially once you dig in.
