The timeless classic Around the World in 80 Days is making its way to the George Theater this month. Join A.D. Players, one of Houston’s largest resident theatre companies, and experience this wild, action-adventure comedy like you’ve never seen before. With 5 actors playing 39 characters, audiences are bound to be fascinated as they make their journey from one side of the globe to the other.
A.D. Players at The George Theater open their 52nd season with quite the journey, one that takes you around the world by hot air balloon, ship, and train, right from your seat. Wanting to start the season with energy, they perform Jules Verne’s work with imaginative props which highlight the play’s adventurous scenes, such as the famous stampede of elephants. Under the direction of Philip Lehl, audiences enjoy performances from long standing company members Kevin Dean and Craig Griffin, top-tier local artists Braden Hunt and Skyler Sinclair, and New York-based actor Luis Quintero.
Around the World in 80 Days, published in 1873, was first an adventure novel by Jules Verne. In 1874, a theatrical adaptation by Mark Brown and Adolphe d’Ennery opened at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris for 415 performances. It then moved to the Théâtre du Châtelet where it ran for 2,195 performances over 64 years. Since then, it’s been adapted to the screen including the 2004 Disney-live action with actor Jackie Chan. This classic tale continues to be adapted worldwide. Luckily, visitors have an opportunity to traverse the seven continents with one of Houston’s award-winning theatre companies.
As an artist I’m very interested in removing any obstacles between the play and the audience. This version appealed to me because telling this story with 5 actors, imaginative props, and minimal set to create the effects is about as elemental as it gets.
– Director, Philip Lehl
