Discover Drama: Houston Grand Opera Presents Mozart’s Don Giovanni

in Art & Culture by

Houston Grand Opera is one of the largest and acclaimed opera companies in the country. The company is thrilled to be the only American finalists for Opera Company of the Year in the 2019 International Opera Awards. To date, Houston Grand Opera’s 2019-2020 season has been one for the books and much more is planned.  The spring production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni opens April 20th at Wortham Theater Center and marks the debut of Danish director, Kasper Holten.

The story takes a unique approach to legendary womanizer Don Giovanni’s story and connects with the current political climate and #MeToo movement. Holten’s production dives into what hell might look and feel like for the charismatic serial seducer. The New York Times called it “striking and clever” as the entire HGO team worked to give the 231-year-old classic a contemporary perspective.

Staring in the role of Giovanni is Ryan McKinny who was recently named by Opera News as, “one of the finest singers of his generation.” His servant, Leporello is played by Italian baritone Paolo Bordogna. This opera is a co-production with The Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Gran Teatre del Liceu; and The Israeli Opera.
