Norman Rockwell:American Freedom, at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is the first comprehensive exhibit of Rockwell’s iconic depictions of FDR’s Four Freedoms—Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Fear, and Freedom from Want. The seven-city tour, organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum, features the 4 paintings along with many of his other paintings, illustrations and prints.
The exhibit touches on the political climate of the 1940s as well as Rockwell’s artistic response to the times. He challenged himself to create pieces that portrayed Roosevelt’s grand ideals in a way that the American people would be able to relate to. The 1943 paintings immediately struck a cord with the American people have become an iconic part of history.
