Houston has a shiny new piece of art. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) officially debuted Cloud Column by Anish Kapoor on May 20th. The new sculpture greets visitors as the centerpiece of the Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza, just outside the redesigned Glassell School of Art, which are all part of an ambitious MFAH campus expansion. This stunning, slender oblong of hand-sculpted stainless steel stands 32 feet high and weighs in at an impressive 21,000 pounds.
Much like its famous sister sculpture, Cloud Gate,(aka “the bean”) in Chicago, Cloud Column will be a magnet for selfies, especially given the funhouse effect produced by its mirrored surface. While H-town has yet to settle on a nickname for its own Kapoor sculpture — perhaps space pod, or even the shiny jalapeño — it might be best to just admire the clouds through Kapoor’s sculpture.
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will transform into a late-night party for Mixed Media by BBVA Compass on July 20 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Enjoy cocktails, food, live music, and art in Houston’s largest museum. Keep Reading
