Former Olympic Boxer Brings Italian Flair to Houston

in Dining & Nightlife by

For Culinary Expert and former Olympian and Bronze Medalist Andrea Magi, challenges are not a problem. Following the success of his Mascalzone restaurant chain in London, UK, his next goal was to set up a restaurant in the US.

Now the authentically Italian chain has arrived in Houston and is fast establishing itself as a popular stop for food lovers with its fresh take on traditional favorites.

I chose Houston for Mascalzone’s first U.S. location because of its vibrant, growing international community and adventurous palates. I’m excited to bring old and new favourite Italian dishes to the community and offer an experience that is 100 percent Italian and 100 percent unique.” – Andrea Magi

It was after announcing his retirement from boxing in 1998 that the time was right to return to what has always been a family passion. Magi’s grandfather was a chef, and his “Auntie,” a private chef who worked for tenor Luciano Pavarotti.

Favorite dishes on the menu include a highly-addictive Parmesan-laden risotto with Milanese-style braised veal and zesty Gremolata at its center,  the Scallopina ai Funghi (Veal Escalopes with Mushrooms and Garlic in a White Wine Sauce) and Gamberoni all’Aglio (Grilled King Prawns in a White Wine Sauce).

For Magi the ingredients are key, with produce shipped from Italy and house-made Pastas, Breads, Focaccia and Cheeses (the Burata Alle Mele, with home made Mozzarella and Fuji Apple is a must for all food enthusiasts).

Alongside an extensive list of shareable plates, Mascalzone is known for offering up a great tasting pizza prepared true to the original Neapolitan style. Pizza lovers will find the restaurant’s namesake the Mascalzone, a cleverly constructed half pizza- half calzone hybrid – unique and to die for!

The restaurant holds an excellent wine cellar accompanied by regular Wine Tasting Events including a Wine and Chocolate pairing evening on August 2nd.

Indeed part of Mascalzone’s popularity can be owed to a busy events schedule, along with Wine Classes, there is Live Jazz Every Friday presenting some of Houston’s top Jazz musicians. If you enjoy live music and fine dining all at reasonable prices, then it’s worth taking a look at what’s happening in the Events Calendar.

Another part is down to their team of highly experienced private dining experts when it comes to creative catering packages for their parties and events. For the team, it is a matter of pride in challenging for the best catering option for events in the Houston region.

Much thought has gone into the Mascalzone experience and it is one that is sure to be remembered thanks not only to the outstanding food and atmosphere but the hospitality and knowledge of the authentically Italian staff. From Chef down to the front of house staff, everyone is passionate about the food and the service they offer.

Mascalzone is open Sunday through Thursday until 10pm with Fridays and Saturdays until 10pm. Catering services and event hire also an option
