Reinvigorated Texas Landmark: The Lancaster Hotel

in Dining & Nightlife/Hotels by

This past fall, the historic Lancaster Hotel reopened its’ doors after a multi-million dollar renovation. The hotel, which has been open since 1926 in Houston’s Theater District, is known for its hospitality and being home to many celebrity guests. The Shinn family of Dallas, who took ownership of the hotel in July 2017, kicked off the renovations with the goal of keeping the hotel’s charm and adding a focus on the visual arts.

The nod to the visual arts came with principal partner Jay Shinn’s collection of more than 200 works of art by both international and Texas artists.  “I am thrilled to be able to combine my passion for art and hospitality into this remarkable venue,” said Shinn. “The broad variety of art in this collection that spans 40 years is meant to be accessible and appreciated by all of our guests.  It is intended to make them stop and contemplate a question they might not otherwise ever consider.  This is what great art can do if you, as our guest, will take the time for the experience.”

The Shinn family is made up of second and third generation hoteliers who had a grand vision for the Lancaster. After Hurricane Harvey did its unfortunate damage to the hotel, the group expedited the renovations. That did not put a pin in their vision which features clean, elegant lines with a muted white, grey, and taupe color pallet. That same color pallet and flow of the lobby was designed to mirror a modern living scenario, where guests feel welcome and comfortable to spend time and the art pops off the walls.

The Lancaster also features a restaurant on their first floor.  Cultivated F+B delivers contemporary American dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to its guests.  Highlights from the menu include Brioche French Toast, a Deviled Egg Collection, Lancaster Crab Cakes, and many more delicious items. Situated between the lobby and Cultivated F+B is a walk up espresso bar, making it seamless to grab a delicious cup of coffee and get out to explore the city.  This Theater District treasure truly delivers an unmatched experience to its guests from start to finish.
